Members from Eye-to-Eye interviewed a number of students between the ages of 13-18 about their views of mental illnesses being portrayed in pop culture.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU SEE QUOTES ABOUT ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION?

  1. On social media but I see these types of quotes especially on TikTok.

  2. Once in awhile. Mostly on my Instagram feed.

  3. I see it on social media feed most of the time.

  4. I see it a lot on social media almost everyday. Mostly on Twitter and Instagram.

  5. I see it everywhere since people try to make it relatable.

  6. I see it everyday on my Instagram feed.

  7. I see it quite often on my Twitter feed.

  8. Twitter. 

  9. I’d have to say Tumblr although they have improved in recent years.

  10. Personally for me it’s not social media it's more of TV shows that are doing it.

  11. Honestly it's everywhere

WHICH CELEBRITIES TALK ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESSES?


  1. Selena Gomez. She directed Thirteen Reasons Why and she is a spokesperson about mental illnesses.

  2. BTS

  3. Alessia Cara. Most of her songs revolve over mental illnesses.


Majority of students interviewed didn’t particularly know of any celebrities who talked about mental illnesses.

DO YOU THINK PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES ARE PRAISED/ SHARE THESE QUOTES?


  1. Some people are praised most of the time. Those who share quotes are praised sometimes but not that often.

  2. I think so. In my opinion when people talk about their mental illnesses, they get all the likes and attention.

  3. Yes because it shows how they feel and it makes me relate.

  4. No. They are underrated.

WHAT IS YOUR GENERAL OPINION ON MENTAL ILLNESS?

    1. We can spread awareness especially on social media.

    2. I feel like it is something that affects a lot of people nowadays and we should all take it as seriously as possible.

    3. That people should express it in order for us to help them.

    4. I think we should be open with it and not make it difficult for others because its a real thing that people suffer from.

    5. Its hard and I think that they should open up to other people.

WOULD YOU WEAR THIS SWEATSHIRT?

  1. I don't think so because I wouldn't share my thoughts on me having anxiety.

  2. Yes, because I relate a lot.

  3. Yes of course. It's actually a really good message to show it to those who are unaware.

  4. Yes, because it would make me feel more comfortable if I had anxiety and that everyone around me would know that I’m suffering from it.

  5. No, because I don't need to let people know that I have anxiety. I would keep it to myself or open up to my mom. I don't need the world to know.

  6. Yes because I would be expressing myself.

DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE GLAMORIZING MENTAL ILLNESSES/ ROMANTICIZING IT?


  In an online poll conducted through Instagram, it was found that 86% felt that people nowadays do romanticise and glamorize mental illnesses whilst the other 14% did not.
